We are committed to active involvement in the local community. Ultimately that means being a valued, responsible community partner. The aim of our charitable endeavours is to ensure our business objectives make a positive difference in the communities in which we operate.
Benchmark Mortgages Inc. is pleased to have an official partnership with the Alberta Cancer Foundation. In becoming a corporate donor, our team is excited that we are able to make an on-going commitment to stand with Albertans who have no choice but to stand up to cancer!
The Alberta Cancer Foundation is committed to making a difference for the 47,000 Albertans who hear the words “you have cancer” every day. As the fundraising partner for the Cross Cancer Institute, Tom Baker Cancer Centre and 15 associate and community cancer centres across the province, we invest in the things that matter to Albertans: earlier detection, better prevention strategies, improved treatment and enhanced quality of life.
The Alberta Cancer Foundation is a movement of everyday heroes who honour those lost to cancer, stand with those facing cancer, and build a future free from cancer. Through ground-breaking research, evidence-based prevention campaigns and support for patients and families, every donation helps move Albertans closer to a cancer-free future.

Brandon Beat Cancer
When I was 36-years-old, with a 2-year-old son and another baby on the way, a light bulb went off and it finally hit me that I had a responsibility to take care of myself to ensure I could be here for my children as I got older. I’m not sure why that realization did not come when our first child was born, but guess I was living life in the fast lane; setting up a home after moving to Edmonton, working both a full-time and part-time job and still in awe of being a new Dad. Thankfully it did hit me, because I recall someone saying once you reach the age of 35 (approximately) you should have annual physicals. Up until this point I only went to the doctor when something was wrong and that wasn’t very often. So — I booked an appointment — did all the usual tests and then the results came back. It was September 2010 when I heard the words “you have cancer.” A plan of action was proposed and two-days later I had surgery followed by more tests and 2-weeks of radiation treatment. My cancer was caught early and I felt blessed that on Dec 24, 2010 all treatment was completed. A holiday season to remember for sure. I had made it!
Since that time I was placed on what is called “Surveillance.” Every six months I would see the great people at the Cross Cancer Institute, the techs, nurses, and doctors for a complete check-up to monitor my progress. In the summer of 2012 (just 6-months after starting Benchmark Mortgages) a biopsy was done and again I heard the words no one wants to hear “you have cancer.” This was a different type of cancer than before known as Hodgkin’s lymphoma. An action plan was proposed that included more surgery and this time 3-weeks of radiation treatment. Two different types of cancers diagnosed within 2 years — what are the odds of that?
To date I have been cancer free for 2 years, and firmly believe that this experience not only helps me appreciated life more fully, but allows me to be a better Mortgage Broker by ensuring that clients take a moment to think of the unthinkable and make sure there is a plan in place to protect their legacy.
